Hover vehicles and ramps.......

So, after a couple hours of digging out a basement hangar for my hover, I learned that the things can't go up ramps. By ramps, I mean the ramp top and ramp bottom pieces connected in 4 block long slopes. Is there some trick to getting them to work, say, downward engine placement or something? It just seems like a "ramp" should have a practical use as a ramp for more than just the player.
