Missing save game, changing name not working.

I opened up my game today and i am missing my save file. i tried both changing my name and changing the name of the ply file in the player folder, but neither worked. The save file still seems to exist, and when i try to create a new world I am told that the name already exists in the system, but nothing is showing up in the "resume game" menu in game. please advise
