Possible to build an HV that isn't an 800-ton mess?

I've been trying for days to build "the perfect HV." I think I'm just giving up, though. It seems impossible to build an HV that isn't so heavy that it can't climb hills, unless you make it bare minimum (no oxygen tanks, no guns, nothing but the minimum requirements). I've tried all sorts of shapes from Z-shape to L-shape, my last one looked like a giraffe. Funny, but sad and kept falling on its face. Getting the guns to line up with the target site, well at least I pulled that off finally....
